Gene and Miranda Philbin, husband and wife team started Peculiar Culinary Company in August of 2012 with the goal of supporting the local community by hosting supper club events geared towards supporting local business, art and music. The initial goal was to get a great group of people together that believe in our ‘support local’ philosophy, while giving Gene a creative outlet. This started as a passion project that quickly evolved into so much more!

The mission and vision of Peculiar Culinary Company is to take what is local and seasonal to create something a little bit different. Most importantly everything is made from scratch. Our style of cooking is our “peculiar twist” on classic comfort food dishes.

We started catering small functions and continued with our regular ‘pop up’ dinners in various locations throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. We received 2nd place in the Battle of the Burger in 2013. We started catering weddings and other large events and received some great press from local media outlets. In 2014, we catered some of our largest events yet and by the end of the year moved into a larger commercial kitchen and small event space. By the end of the year, Gene then had his first appearance on national television when he participated in The Food Network’s ‘Guys Grocery Games’ hosted by Guy Fieri. Gene won the holiday episode ‘Dashing Through the Isles’! In 2015, Miranda and Gene were featured on CNBC’s ‘Restaurant Startup’ episode ‘Small Markets, Big Dreams’ in the spring. We did not advance or get an investment, but we had a great experience and we still own 100% of our company!
We launched our Kickstarter Campaign in June 2015 and 30 days later we were successfully funded, which was a huge help in acquiring our food truck. There were some delays in the build out, so we officially launched our food truck by the end of October 2015.

We have received a number of accolades such as Best Chef & Best Caterer from the Electric City/Diamond City 570.com, Times Leader, Northeast Business Journal Top 20 under 40 and others. We have a growing catering business, award winning food truck and we host weekly dinners at our event space near Scranton, PA. Events are BYOB and walk-ins are welcome. We also host a monthly ‘Peculiar Concert Series’ That features local musicians. On our food truck, we play all local music as well!

Gene is a 2004 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Culinary Arts & Hotel Restaurant Management, with experience ranging from food sales to chef work in corporate and fine and casual dining establishments.

Miranda is a 2006 graduate of Wilkes University in Business Administration and Marketing, with experience in human resources, business management, hospitality and event planning.

We support community efforts, especially those related to hunger. Our first ‘Peculiar Music Festival’ was an all-day local music festival that also featured local artists and food vendors. We raised funds to support area parks. Our second ‘Peculiar Music Festival’ in 2014 featured local bands and musicians including food vendors, artists and other vendors. We raised funds for the Greater Pittston Meals on Wheels. In 2015 we hosted a Meet the Farmers Dinner for area farmers to showcase their products and meet the public. Funds were raised for the Tunkhannock Farmers Market. We are a huge supporter of nonprofit organizations in our area and cater events for their causes throughout the year. We work with area farms including Rowlands PA Produce, Fullers Overlook Farm and Lackawaxen Farm Co.
